Today, I had to sit between my parents in the car as they argued with one another for a whole hour over whether or not a thumb is a finger. FML
で「今日、車の中で丸一時間、親指は指なのかどうかを巡って言い争う両親の間に座っていなければならなかった。 F*ck my life!」という意味になります。

I had to sit between my parents in the car で「私は座っていなければならなかった、両親の間に、車の中で」です。
as ～ は接続詞で「～するなかで、～する時に」です。
(as) they argued with one another で「両親がお互いに言い争う（なかで）」です。
argue with ～ で「～と言い争う、～と口論する」です。
one another は each other と同じで「お互いに」という意味になります。
どちらも二人か3人以上の時に使います。

for a whole hour で「丸一時間もの間」です。
for ～ は「（時間）～の間、～の期間」です。
a whole hour は an hour に whole を追加して強調した形で「丸一時間」です。
over ～ は argue over ～ と繋がって「～について議論する、～を巡って言い争う」です。
何を巡って言い争っていたのかというと、名詞節が続き、
whether or not a thumb is a finger. で「親指は指なのかどうか（を巡って）」です。
whether or not ～ で「～かどうか、～かそうじゃないか」という意味の言い回し。
whether だけでも同じ意味になります。
thumb サムは「親指」ですね。
日本語では呼び名でもわかる通り「親指も指」というのは当たり前の認識ですが、英語では親指と他の指を分けて考えます。
名前も親指だけ thumb で、他は index finger などと呼び方が違います。
ちなみに日本語で言う「足の指」は「指」という認識さえなく全部まとめて toes と言います。
