winners は記事中で出てくる the Nobel prize（ノーベル賞）の受賞者を指しています。

a study of recent Nobel laureates published in 2019 found. で「最近のノーベル受賞者の2019年に発表された研究が明らかにした」です。
laureate [ロ]ーリイトゥで「受賞者」です。winner の言い換えですね。
laurel ローレォで「月桂樹」という意味なので、月桂樹を冠として受賞者が頭にのせたことが由来です。

Regardless of discipline, で「学問の分野にかかわらず」です。
