J.K. Rowling のハーバード大学の卒業式でのスピーチ（2008年）です。

I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk that would never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension. で「私はその頃、だた一つ自分が一生やりたいと思えることは小説を書くことだと確信していました。でも私の両親（どちらも貧しい家の出で大学に行ったことがない）の考え方は、私の当時の行き過ぎた想像力は単なる面白い奇行か何かであり、住宅ローンを返したり、年金を確保するのに役立つものではない、というものでした。今考えるとこの話は、漫画の中で（キャラクターの）頭を金床が打ち付けるほどの衝撃的な皮肉ですね。」という意味になります。

I was convinced that ～ で「私は～だと確信していた」です。
convince で「～を確信させる、納得させる、説得する」です。
何を確信していたかというと、
(that) the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was ～ で「私がやりたいと思うたった一つのこと、ずっと、は～」です。
ever は「この先ずっと、一生」という意味になっています。
to write novels. で「小説を書くこと」です。

However, ～「しかしながら～」
my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, までが主語です。
my parents「私の両親」で、カンマ以降は付加的な情報で
both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds で「その両親どちらも貧困の生い立ちから来た」です。
both of whom の whom は my parents を受けています。
come from ～ で「～出身である、～の出である」
impoverished backgrounds で「貧困の素性」です。
background は「背景」という意味から「個人の素性、経歴、生い立ち」という意味もあります。
and ～ で「また～」
neither of whom で「そのどちらも～ではない」です。この whom も同じく my parents を受けています。
had been to college, で「大学に行ったことが（なかった）」です。
そんな両親が、
took the view that ～ で「～という考え方をしていた」です。
take the view that ～ で「～というものの見方をする」という意味のコロケーションです。
ここでの view は「見方、考え方」です。
どんな考え方をしていたかというと、
(that) my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk で「私の過剰な想像力はただの楽しい個人的な奇癖だ（という考え方）」
overactive は「（悪影響が出るほど）過度に活動的な」です。
imagination は「想像力、創作力、空想」です。
その奇癖というのは、
(that) would never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension. で「住宅ローンを払ったり、年金を賄ったりは決してしない（奇癖）」です。

I know that ～「～だと知っている、～だと思う」です。
the irony strikes with the force of a cartoon anvil, は直訳すると「皮肉が打つ、漫画の金床の衝撃で」です。
ちょっと難しいですが、以下のサイトが参考になりました。

上記によれば、つまりこれは、アメリカのカートゥーンアニメ（トムとジェリーなど）に出てくる描写のイメージです。
anvil は鍛冶屋が使う「金床」で、それが漫画のキャラの頭にぶつかるコミカルなシーンが想像できます。
そのようなイメージで「皮肉が見事にヒットしている（the irony strikes）」ということですね。
J.K.ローリングの資産はハリーポッターの大ヒットで数百億円にもなるということですから、これはまさに皮肉ですね。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
