で「慢性的に不平を言う人、たとえ最も激しい批判者であっても、忍耐強く、共感をもって耳を傾ける聞き手の前では、しばしば態度を和らげ、おとなしくなるものだ。つまり、怒りに満ちたあら探し屋がキングコブラのように身をふくらませ、体内の毒を吐き出しているあいだも、黙って耳を傾けてくれるような聞き手である。」という意味になります。
The chronic kicker, で「慢性的に文句ばかり言う人」です。
chronic 「慢性的な、長期患いの、常習的な」という意味の形容詞。
kicker は古いスラングで「文句を言う人、反対ばかりする人、ケチをつける人」です。
カンマで区切って挿入的に , even the most violent critic,「たとえ最も激しい批判者でも」です。
critic は「批判者、批評家」
violent はここでは「暴力的な」ではなく「猛烈な、激しい、強烈な」です。
will frequently soften and be subdued で「しばしば、態度を和らげ、おとなしくなるものだ」です。
ここでの will は単純な未来形ではなく、「～するものだ」という意味で、一般的な傾向・習性・当然性を表しています。
例：Children will ask difficult questions.「子どもは難しい質問をするものだ。」、Boys will be boys.「男の子とはそういうものだ。」
frequently は often と同義語で「しばしば、よく～する」
soften ソフンで「柔らかくなる、態度を和らげる、穏やかになる」
be subdued で「おとなしくなる、緩和する、鎮まる」です。
subdue ～ で「～を鎮圧する、制圧する、抑制する、痛みなどを緩和する」です。
in the presence of ～ で「～のいる場所では、～がいるところでは」という意味の言い回しです。
(in the presence of) a patient, sympathetic listener で「忍耐強く、共感力がある聞き手（がいるところでは）」です。
sympathetic スィンパ[セ]ティクで「共感力のある、同情的な」という意味の形容詞。
— a listener who ～「（つまり）～な聞き手だ」
(who) will be silent while ～ で「～している間、静かにしている（聞き手）」です。
(while) the irate fault-finder dilates like a king cobra で「激怒したあら探し屋がキングコブラの如く体をふくらませている（間）」です。
irate アイ[レ]イトゥで「怒りに満ちた、激怒した」という意味の形容詞。
fault-finder は「あら探しをする人、揚げ足を取る人」です。
dilate は「膨らむ、（身体の器官などが）拡張する」
and ～「そして～」
spews the poison out of his system. で「毒を噴射させる（間）、その体内から」つまり「心の中の毒＝怒りや不満を吐き出す」です。
spew スピューで「～を吐き出す、噴射する」
out of ～「～から」
system はここでは「（人や動物の）体内、心身の内部」です。
get it out of one’s system で「憂さを吐き出す、たまった不満を吐き出す」という決まり文句の発展形ですね。
例：Just say what you want to say and get it out of your system.「言いたいことを言って、胸の中から吐き出しなよ。」
それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
