The single greatest lesson で「最大の教訓」
the single greatest ～ で「最大の、この上ない、何よりも大きな」という意味のコロケーション。
lesson は、ここでは「教訓、知恵、戒め」という意味になります。
(that) the garden teaches で「庭が教える（教訓）」です。
teach a lesson で「教訓を与える」となります。
is that ～ で「は、～ということだ」
our relationship to the planet で「この地球との我々の関係は」です。
relationship with ～ が「～との双方向的な関係」という意味であるのに対して、
relationship to ～ は、ある物事とつながり方、関連性・位置づけを表します。
ここでは、人類が地球に対してどのような立場を取り、どう関わっているか、ということを意味しています。
need not be zero-sum,「ゼロサムである必要はない。」です。
これは need の助動詞の用法です。
普通の動詞としての need を使うなら、does not need to be ～とも言えます。
zero-sum とは、一方が得をするとその分だけもう一方が損をする仕組みです。
場所取りゲームなどがそうですね。
and ～「また～」
that ～「～ということも」
as long as the sun still shines で「太陽が輝き続ける限り、」
as long as ～ で「～する限りは、～していさえすれば」という意味の接続詞です。
and ～「そして～」
people still can plan and plant, 「人々が計画を立て種を植えることができ（れば）」
plan and plant は語呂合わせですね。
, think and do,「（人々が）考えて行動す（れば）」
そうすれば、
we can,「我々は～できる」
if we bother to try,「面倒でも～しようとするなら」
bother to do ～ は「面倒でも～する、わざわざ～する、あえて～する」という意味の言い回しです。
(can) find ways to provide for ourselves で「自給自足する方法を見つけられる」
without diminishing the world. で「世界を損なわずに」
diminish ～ は「～を減らす」という意味から「～を損なう、劣化させる」です。
provide for ～ で「～を養う、食わせる、必要なものを賄う」です。
それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
