We’d been learning about ancient Greek myths in primary school. My grandfather died and was laid out before burying. I wanted to make sure he had a coin to pay the ferryman but didn’t even have a ha’penny so I put a chocolate button on each of his eyes.

We’d been learning about ancient Greek myths in primary school. My grandfather died and was laid out before burying. I wanted to make sure he had a coin to pay the ferryman but didn’t even have a ha’penny so I put a chocolate button on each of his eyes.
で「祖父が亡くなるちょうどその頃、私は小学校で古代ギリシャ神話について習っていました。祖父は埋葬される前に安置されていました。私は、祖父が渡し守に払うためのコインをちゃんと持っているか心配になりました。でも、半ペニー硬貨すら持っていなかったので、祖父の両目にチョコレートのボタン菓子を一つずつ載せました。」という意味になります。
We’d been learning about ～ で「私たちは～について習っていた」
(about) ancient Greek myths 「古代ギリシャ神話（について）」
in primary school.「小学校で」です。
We’d been ～ing は We had been ～ing で過去完了進行形です。
ある過去の時点より前に「ずっと～していた」という意味になります。
その過去の時点とは何時なのかというと、
My grandfather died and ～「祖父が死んで～」
was laid out before burying.「埋葬の前に、安置されていた」です。
laidは lay「～横たえる」の過去分詞形です。
be laid out は「（遺体として）安置される」という意味になります。
burying [ベ]リイングは「埋葬」です。
I wanted to make sure (that) ～ で「私は必ず～するようにしたかった」
he had a coin to pay the ferryman「祖父が例の渡し守に払うコインを持って（いるように）」です。
the ferryman は「あの渡し守」です。
ギリシャ神話に登場する冥界の川を渡すカローンのことですね。
but ～「しかし～」
didn’t even have a ha’penny「私は半ペニーさえ持っていなかった」です。
ha’penny [ヘ]イプニと読んで「半ペニー」です。
イギリスでは１ペニーの下に1/2ペニーというコインが存在していましたが1984年に廃止されています。
so ～「だから～」
I put a chocolate button「ボタン型チョコレートを置いた」
on each of his eyes.「彼の両目の上それぞれに」
chocolate button は、イギリスでお馴染みのボタンの形をしたチョコレート菓子です。
それはまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
