□greatness 音声 グ[レ]イトネス 偉大さ,大きさ □wealth 音声 [ウェ]ルス 富,財産 □acquire 音声 アク[ワ]イアー 手に入れる,獲得する,入手する □integrity 音声 イン[テ]グリティー 高潔さ,品位,誠実さ,完全性 □ability 音声 ア[ビ]リティー の力 □affect 音声 ア[フェ]クト ～に作用を及ぼす,～に影響を与える ■those around ～ ～の周りにいる人々 □positively 音声 [パ]ズィティヴリ 前向きに,良い方向に,プラスに ※ 引用元：WBob Marley Quotes - BrainyQuote http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/b/bobmarley578991.html 今日は、レゲエミュージックの神様ボブ・マーリー（Bob Marley）の名言です。 The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively. で「男の偉大さはどれだけ富を得たかではなく、周りにいる人々にプラスの影響を与える彼の気高さと能力にある。」という意味になります。 The greatness of a man が主語ですね。 greatness は「偉大さ、大きさ」です. great の名詞形です。 man は「人」という意味もありますが、今回の文では、後の方に he が出てくるので「男」と訳します。 not ～ but … の形ですね。「～ではなく、…である」という文意となります。 in how much wealth he acquires で「彼がどれだけ多くの富を手に入れたか、の中に」です。 in は The greatness of a man がどこにあるかということを受けています。 acquire は「手に入れる、獲得する、買収する」という意味の動詞です。 時間をかけて努力して手に入れるという意味合いです。 例：acquire a foreign language「外国語を習得する」、acquire a license「免許を取得する」 ↑ではなく（not ～ but）て in his integrity and his ability で「彼の高潔さと能力、の中に」となります。 integrity は人を表すときは「高潔さ、気高さ、品位、誠実さ」という意味で訳されます。 元の意味は「完全性」という意味です。 integer（整数）や integration（統合）が同じ語源です。 ability は「できる能力、力量」という意味です。 こちらは able などと同じ語源ですね。 affect those around him positively で「周りにいる人たちにプラスの影響を与える」という意味です。 affect は「影響を与える、作用を及ぼす」という意味の動詞です。 例：affect a team's morale「チームの士気に影響を及ぼす」 those around ～ で「~の周りにいる人たち」となります。 those はこのように「人々」という意味で使われる場合がありますので覚えておきましょう。 例：those gathered「集まった人々」、those in power「権力者たち」 positively は「プラスに、良い方向に、前向きに」という意味の副詞です。 形容詞形は positive ですね。 逆は negative「負の、悪い、後ろ向きな」です。
