口run [ラ]ン 出馬する,立候補する 口independent イン・ディ・[ペ]ン・デントゥ 独立した,無所属の 口candidate [カ]ン・ディ・デイトゥ 候補者,志望者 口defeat ディ・[フィ]ートゥ 負かす,勝つ,打ち倒す ■former minister 元大臣 口former [フォ]ー・マー 元の,前の,かつての 口minister [ミ]・ニ・スター 大臣 ■internal affairs 内政,総務省の ※ 引用元：Koike Yuriko Named Tokyo’s First Female Governor - nippon.com http://www.nippon.com/en/behind/l00163/ Running as an independent candidate, she defeated Masuda Hiroya, the former minister of internal affairs and communications. で「彼女は無所属候補として出馬したものの、元総務大臣の増田寛也に勝利した。」という意味になります。 run は「走る」という意味以外に、「選挙に出る、立候補する、出馬する」という意味があります。 Running as an independent candidate なので「無所属候補として出馬して」という意味になります。 independent candidate で「無所属の立候補者」という意味です。 candidate は「候補者、志願者」という意味の名詞です。 例：candidate for a school「入学志願者」 she defeated Masuda Hiroya で「彼女は増田寛也を破った」です。 defeat は「打ち負かす、～に勝利する」という意味の動詞です。 昨日でてきた beat「負かす、打ちのめす」と同じ意味ですね。 例：defeat an enemy「敵を破る」 the former minister of internal affairs and communications で「元総務大臣」という意味です。 the former minister で「元大臣、かつての大臣」という意味になります。 Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications で日本の「総務省」を意味します。略はMICです。 Internal Affairs は「内政」、Communications は「通信」です。 minister で「大臣」、ministry で「省」という意味です。 ちなみに日本の総務省の仕事内容は以下のようになっています。 総務省は、行政運営の改善、地方行財政、選挙、消防防災、情報通信、郵政行政など、国家の基本的仕組みに関わる諸制度、国民の経済・社会活動を支える基本的システムを所管し、国民生活の基盤に関わる行政機能を担う省です。 ちなみに、会社の「総務」は、general affairs と言います。
