本日の例文

サイモン・シネック氏によるTEDスピーチ「優れたリーダーはどうやって行動を促すか」です。

People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. The goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe.

People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. The goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe.
で「人はあなたがすることにお金を出すわけではなく、あなたがなぜそれをするかにお金を出すのです。目指すべきところは、あなたが持つものを必要としている人とのビジネスではありません。あなたが信じることに共感する人たちとのビジネスを目指すべきです。」という意味になります。

People don’t buy what you do; で「人々はあなたがすることを買わない」です。
人はあなたが何をするかにお金を出すわけではない。
という意味です。

they buy why you do it. で「彼らはあなたがなぜそれをするのかを買う」です。
they は前述の people を指しています。
what you do「何をするか」と why you do it「なぜそれをするか」の対比ですね。

The goal is not to do business with everybody who needs what you have. で「ゴールは～とビジネスをすることではない、あなたが持っているものを必要するすべての人と」です。
The goal はこの場合「目指すべきこと、目的地」という意味です。
do business with ～ で「～と取引する、～とビジネスる、～と商いをする、～に売る」です。

The goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe. で「ゴールは～とビジネスをすることだ、あなたが信じることを信じてくれる人と」です。
people who believe what you believe. で「あなたが信じることを信じる人」です。

「何を」ではなく「なぜ」
「もの」ではなく「信念」ということですね。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

人々は～にお金を出さない

what you do;
あなたがすることに

they buy
彼らは～にお金を出す

why you do it.
あなたがなぜそれをするのかに

The goal is not to do business with
目指すべきは～に物を売ることではない

everybody who needs
～を必要とするすべての人に

あなたが持っているものを

The goal is to do business with
目指すべきなのは～に物を売ることだ

people who believe
～に共感してくれる人に

what you believe.
