But, when it comes to writing, the thing that I’ve been sort of thinking about lately, and wondering about lately, is why? You know, is it rational?
で「しかし書くこととなると、最近わたしがちょっと考えていること、最近疑問に感じていることは『なぜ？』です。それって理にかなってることなのでしょうか？」という意味になります。

when it comes to writing で「書くこととなると」です。
when it comes to ～ は「～のことになると」という意味の慣用句ですね。
対象を限定したい時に使える表現です。
例：when it comes to advertising「広告のことと言えば」

the thing that I’ve been sort of thinking about lately, and wondering about lately, ここまでが主語です。
the thing (that ～) で「～ということ」です。
(that) I’ve been sort of thinking about lately で「私がちょっと考えている（こと）、最近」です。
I’ve been thinking about ～ で「私は～について考えてきた」です。
sort of はこの場合はひとまとまりで副詞として「ちょっと、ある種、多少」という意味合いになります。
このように動詞にかかる副詞としても使われます。この場合は think にかかっています。
例：I’m sort of tired.「ちょっと疲れた」

and wondering about lately で「そして疑問に思っている（こと）最近」です。

is why? で「（～なことは）『なぜ』です。」です。

is it rational? で「それって理にかなってること？」です。
rational ラショナォは「理にかなった、筋の通った」という意味の形容詞です。
例：rational approach「理にかなったやり方」

作家は常に不安でいなければいけない、ということに疑問を持ったということですね。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

しかし作家業について言えば

～のことは

I’ve been sort of thinking about
私はちょっと考えている（こと）

lately,
近頃

and wondering about
そして疑問に思っている（こと）

lately,
近頃

is why?
それは『なぜ？』です。

はい。それって理にかなってるのでしょうか？

今度は「頭の中で」一行ずつ日本語に訳しながら…

では最後に日本語に訳さずにこの文章の情景を思い浮かべられるようになるまで繰り返し読んでみてください。目を閉じて暗唱できるようになったら完璧です。
