で「金曜の朝6時、約5,000人の男たちが、兵庫県の西宮神社の門を突き破り、230メートルを神社の本堂に向かって競走した。先頭を走る者たちは『福男』の座を得ようとして。」という意味になります。

Some 5,000 men が主語で「約5,000人の男たち」です。
some はこの場合は「約、およそ」という意味です。about と同じ意味ですね。

burst through ～ で「～を突き破っていった」です。
burst は「爆発する、はじける」という意味の動詞です。
過去、過去分詞も同型になります。

the gates of Nishinomiya Shrine で「西宮神社の門」です。
gates とは、西宮神社の正門、通称「赤門」のことです。
なぜ複数形になっているのでしょうか？
スタートする門が何カ所かあるわけでもなさそうです。

raced 230 meters toward the shrine’s main hall で「230メートルを競走した、その神社の本堂に向けて」です。
race は「競争する、大急ぎで走る」です。

with the frontrunners attempting to ～ で「先頭を走る者たちが～しようとして」という意味です。
with ～ …ing という形で「～が…している状況で、～しながら」という意味の文型です。
付帯状況を表す、with を伴った分詞構文です。
意味的には、接続詞 as で繋げて、
as the frontrunners attempted to ～ と同等です。

(attempt to) capture the title of fuku-otoko で「福男の座を得（ようとして）」です。
capture the title of ～ で「～のタイトルを得る、～の座を獲得する」です。
capture には「力や策略で捕える、捕獲する、つかまえる、勝ち取る、人の心を魅了する」などという意味があります。
例：capture a moment「瞬間をとらえる」、capture a suspect「容疑者を捕える」
