I mean literally every table, every chair in this apartment had yielded its original function to now serve as a surface for swaying stacks of books. Just like the rest of my family, my grandfather’s favorite thing to do in the whole world was to read.

で「というのも、まさにそのアパートメントにあるすべてのテーブルとイスは本来の機能を放棄してしまっており、山積みの本を支える台として機能している有様でした。私の他の家族同様、祖父は読むことがこの世の中で何よりも好きでした。」という意味になります。

I mean ～ で「つまり～、というのも」という意味合いの言い回しです。

literally は「まさに、文字通り」という意味です。

every table, every chair in this apartment が主語で「このアパートメントの全てテーブルとイスが」です。

had yielded its original function で「明け渡してしまっていた、その本来の機能を」です。
yield は「～に明け渡す、放棄する、譲る」という意味の動詞です。
yield ～ to … で「～を…に明け渡す」です。
yield は他にも「（農作物や報酬・利益などを）産出する」「～に屈服する」という意味もあります。
また金融用語では「利益」という意味にもなります。
例：yield amount「収穫量」、capital yield「資本利益率」、yield to temptation「誘惑に屈する」
its original function とは「その本来の機能」です。
テーブルや椅子の本来の機能、座ったり、その上で食事したりする機能ですね。

それらの役割を放棄して、
to now serve as a surface for swaying stacks of books. で「今や～することに、～として役割を果たす、面として、揺れる本の山のための」です。
serve as a surface で「ただの面としての役割になる」です。
a surface for swaying stacks of books で「フラフラする本の山のための面」です。つまり本を置くための「平らな場所」です。
swaying は形容詞で「揺れ動く、フラフラする」です。
例：swaying attitude「揺れ動く姿勢」

Just like the rest of my family, で「私の他の家族と同様に」です。
the rest of my family で「私の家族の残り→他の家族」です。
英語独特の表現ですね。

my grandfather’s favorite thing to do in the whole world was to read. で「全世界の中で祖父が好きなことは、読むことだった」です。
favorite thing to do で「（やることで）お気に入りのこと」です。
in the whole world は「全世界中で」です。in the world の強調表現です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
