Britain ruled Jamaica for more than 300 years, で「イギリスはジャマイカを支配した、300年以上の間」です。
Britain は the United Kingdom と同じ意味で「英国」です
Jamaica 発音は、ジャ[メ]イカという感じになります。
for ～ で「～の間」
more than 300 years で「300年以上」です。

forcing ～ は分詞構文で「～を強制しながら」という意味合いです。
force ～ to do … で「～に…することを強要する、余儀なくさせる」です。
hundreds of thousands of African slaves で「数十万人ものアフリカ人奴隷たち」です。
to toil the land で「土地を耕す（ことを）」強要した、です。
toil は名詞では「苦役、苦しい仕事」ですが、ここでは他動詞として「～を耕す」という意味で使われています。
the land で「その土地、その国土」です。
under brutal conditions で「ひどい条件の下で」です。
brutal は「残虐な、残忍な、過酷な」という意味の形容詞です。
名詞形は brute ブルートゥで「けだもの、野蛮な生き物」です。

Jamaica gained its independence in August 1962 で「ジャマイカは独立を手に入れた、1962年の8月に」
gain は「～を手に入れる、獲得する」です。
its independence で「ジャマイカの独立を」です。

but「しかし」
remained within the British commonwealth. で「英連邦の中に残った」です。
remain で「（依然として）～のままである、～に留まる」です。
the British commonwealth は「英連邦、イギリス連邦」と訳されて、イギリスの植民地だった国々が主に加盟しています。
現在の加盟国は54カ国で、大きいところだと、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、カナダ、インド、パキスタン、ナイジェリア、南アフリカなども入ります。
