So the centuries passed with Britains happily speaking Old English, but in the 700’s, a series of Viking invasions began, which continued until a treaty split the island in half. On one side were the Saxons. On the other side were the Danes who spoke a language called Old Norse.

So「そんなわけで」
the centuries passed で「数世紀が過ぎた」
with Britains happily speaking Old English, で「ブリテン島の住人たちが幸せに古英語を話しながら」です。
with ～ …ing で「～が…しながら、～が…する状況の中で」という意味になります。

but ～「しかし」
in the 700’s,「700年代に」です。
a series of Viking invasions began, で「一連のバイキングによる侵略が始まった」です。
, which continued until ～ で「（それは）～まで続いた」
which ～ は a series of Viking invasions を主語にとった関係代名詞です。
いつまで続いたのかというと、
(until) a treaty split the island in half. で「ある条約がその島を半分に分割する（まで）」です。
treaty で「条約」
split スプリットゥは「～を分ける、分割する」という意味の動詞です。
過去形・過去分詞形が同じ形になる動詞なので分かりづらいですが、ここでは過去形になっています。
split ～ in half で「～を半分に分割する」という意味のコロケーション。
the island は「ブリテン島」を指しています。

On one side were the Saxons. で「一方はサクソン族がいて」
the Saxons were on one side が倒置された形です。
On the other side were the Danes で「もう一方にはデーン人たちがいた」です。
(the Danes) who spoke a language called Old Norse. で「古ノルド語と呼ばれる言語を話した（デーン人たち）」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
