本日の例文

Mark Zuckerberg のハーバード大学の卒業式でのスピーチ（2017年）です。

Last year I took him out to breakfast for his birthday. I wanted to get him a present, so I asked him and he started talking about students he saw struggling and said “You know, I’d really just like a book on social justice.” I was blown away.

Last year I took him out to breakfast for his birthday. I wanted to get him a present, so I asked him and he started talking about students he saw struggling and said “You know, I’d really just like a book on social justice.” I was blown away.
で「去年、彼の誕生日に朝食をごちそうするために連れ出したんです。何かプレゼントもあげたくて、何がほしいか聞いてみたら、彼は困っている学生たちのことを話し始めて『僕は本当に、社会正義についての本を一冊買ってもらえたらうれしいです。』と言ったんです。私はその言葉にすっかり圧倒されました。」という意味になります。

Last year「去年」
I took him out to breakfast「彼を朝食に連れ出した」
for his birthday.「彼の誕生日のために」です。
take ～ out to … で「～を…に連れ出す」

I wanted to get him a present,「私は彼にプレゼントを買いたかった」です。
get ～ a present で「～にプレゼンを買う」という意味の言い回し。
get は buy とほぼ同じ意味合い。
get a present for him とも言い換えられます。
例：Can you get me a coffee?「コーヒーを買ってきて？」
, so I asked him「なので、私は彼に（何が欲しいか）尋ねた」です。
and ～「すると～」
he started talking about ～「彼は～について話し始めた」
(about) students (that) he saw struggling で「生徒たち（について）、彼が見た、苦労しながら頑張っているのを」です。
that節を展開すると、he saw (the students) struggling で「彼はその生徒たちが苦労しながら頑張っているのを見た」です。
struggle は「もがき苦しむ、悪戦苦闘する、苦労しながら頑張っている」です。
ネガティブ寄りの意味合いですが、努力のニュアンスも含まれます。
and said ～「そして～と言った」
“You know, 「そうですね」
I’d really just like ～「ほんとにただ～が欲しいだけです」
a book on social justice.”「ソーシャルジャスティスの本を」です。
I would like ～ で「できれば～が欲しい」です。I want ～ の丁寧形。
really just は「ほんとうに、それだけでいい」という遠慮の気持ちです。
social justice は「社会正義、社会的公正」ですが、
人種、性別、経済的地位に関わらず、すべての構成員が平等な権利、機会、待遇を享受できる社会を目指す概念を指します。
on ～ はここでは「～に関する、～についての」という意味の前置詞。

I was blown away.「私はすっかり圧倒されました。」です。
blow ～ away で「～を吹き飛ばす」ですが、
be blown away で「圧倒される、感動させられる、感心する」です。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

去年

I took him out to breakfast
私は彼を朝食に連れ出した

for his birthday.
彼の誕生日のために

I wanted to get him a present,
私は彼にプレゼントを買いたかったので

so I asked him
彼に何がいいか尋ねた

and he started talking about students
すると彼は、ある生徒たちについて話し始めた

he saw struggling
苦労しながら頑張っているのを彼が見た（生徒たち）

and said
そして言った

“You know,
そうですね

I’d really just like
ほんとにただ～が欲しいです

a book on social justice.”
社会正義に関する本を

I was blown away.
私は圧倒されてしまった
