で「金曜日に公表された新しい研究調査が、約6600万年前の化石化されたその日の一場面を捕えている。その日、小惑星が地球に衝突し、空からは火が降り注ぎ、現代の地震よりはるかに激しく大地が揺れた。」という意味になります。

New research released Friday までが主語ですね。
「金曜日に公表された新しい研究調査」です。
research は「研究、調査」という意味の名詞です。
released は「公表された、発表された、公にされた」という意味の形容詞です。

captures a fossilized snapshot of the day で「化石化されたその日のスナップショットを捕えている」です。
capture は「捕える、捕まえる」です。また「場面などを切り取る」という意味でも使われます。
例：capture a screenshot「スクリーンショットを撮る」
a fossilized snapshot of the day は「その日の化石化されたスナップショット」です。
snapshot は「（日常を切り取った何気ない）写真」のことです。
of the day の the day とは小惑星が地球に衝突したまさに「その日」のことです。
fossilize フォッシライズは「化石化する」です。
名詞形は fossil ファッソォ「化石」です。
例：fossilized insect 「化石化した昆虫」

nearly 66 million years ago で「おおよそ6600万年前の」です。

when an asteroid smacked Earth, で「一つの小惑星が地球にぶつかった時」です。
smack は「ピシャリと打つ、強くたたく」という意味の動詞です。
例：smack someone in the head「人の頭を強打する」
asteroid は「小惑星」でしたね。
ちなみに隕石は meteor ミーティァです。

fire rained from the sky で「火が空から降り注いだ」です。
rain はこの場合は「雨が降る」ではなく「～が雨のように降り注ぐ」という意味になります。

and the ground shook far worse than any modern earthquake. で「大地が揺れた、現代のどんな地震よりもはるかにひどく」です。
the ground shook で「大地が揺れた」です。
shook は shake シェイクの過去形になります。
far worse は「はるかに悪く」です。
far は比較級を強める副詞で「はるかに、さらに、ずっと」という意味になります。
