で「しかしアメリカでも初期の頃は、歴史家が『品性の文化』と呼ぶ時代に私たちは生きていた。その時代にはまだ、その時点では、人の内なる自己や道徳的な正直さに価値を置いていました。」という意味になります。

in America’s early days, で「アメリカの初期の頃は」という意味になります。
early days で「初期の頃、黎明期」という意味です。
early times とも言えます。
例：in the early days of the Internet「インターネットの黎明期に」

we lived in ～ で「私たちは～に生きていた」です。

どこに住んでいたかというと、
what historians call a culture of character で「歴史家が品性の文化と呼ぶもの（時代）に」です。
what historians call ～で「歴史家が～と呼ぶもの」です。
a culture of character で「品性の文化」です。
character は「性格、ひととなり」という意味もありますが「人格、品性」という意味でもよく使われます。
同じ人格でも良く対比されるのが、
character ＝「（本当の）道徳的な人格、品性」
personality ＝「表面的な人格」
です。

where we still, at that point, valued people (for ～)で「（そこでは）私たちはまだ、その時点では、人々を（～で）評価していた」です。
where ～は上記の「品性の文化の中では」ということです。
「時代」など時を指す場合でも when ではなく、where が使われることがよくあります。（「場合・局面・時代」など。）
例：We live in an age where ～「私たちは～な時代に生きている」
at that point で「その時点では、その時は」です。
value peaople for ～ で「人を～で評価していた」です。
value は「～を評価する、価値を置く、尊重する」です。

for their inner selves and their moral rectitude. で「内なる自分と道徳的清廉さで（評価した）」です。
their は前出の people を指しています。
inner selves は inner self の複数形で「内なる自分」となります。
moral rectitude は「道徳的清廉さ」という意味です。
rectitude は「清廉潔白さ、正直さ、公正さ」という意味の名詞です。
例：behave with rectitude「清廉潔白にふるまう」

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。

私たちは～に生きていた

what historians call
歴史家が～と呼ぶ時代に
