縄文時代の竪穴式住居をイメージした広島にあるユニークな住宅を紹介する記事です。

In the Jomon period, the pre-historic peoples of Japan lived in pit-dwelling houses, in which columns were inserted into a big hole dug in the ground and then surrounded by grass.
で「縄文時代、日本の先史時代の人々は竪穴式住居で生活していた。それは大きく掘った穴に柱を差し込みその周りを草で覆ったものである。」という意味になります。

the Jomon period は「縄文時代」です。
period は「終わり、終止符」という意味でもおなじみですが、今回の様に「ある一定の期間、時代」という意味でも使われます。
例：period of adolescence「思春期」、Edo Period「江戸時代」

pre-historic (prehistric) は「先史時代の」という意味です。
history は「歴史」ですが、歴史の「史」とは「記録を書き記した」ものであり、文字が発明される以前の時代のことを「先史」と言います。

pit dwelling で「竪穴式住居」のことをになります。
dwell は「住む」で、dwelling は名詞で「住居、居住施設」という意味になります。
例：traditional dwelling「伝統的住居」
pit は「地面に掘った穴、くぼみ」です。

columns were inserted into a big hole で「柱が大きな穴に差し込まれている」です。

dug in the ground で「地面に掘られた」です。
dug は dig「掘る」の過去分詞です。

surrounded by grass は「草で周りを囲われた」となります。
surround は「取り囲む、包囲する」という意味の動詞。
例：surround an enemy force「敵軍を包囲する」
grass は「芝生」というイメージが強いですが、「草、牧草」という意味もあります。

それではまず文節に分けて日本語に訳し内容を理解して下さい。
